Professional attire is a very important subject, because the way you are perceived impacts your career prospects. Clothing has a strong power over the way we view one another.Some people are unaware of this fact, so they undermine their own credibility by not considering self-presentation as a form expression. Our desire to believe dress doesn’t matter is strong.I am not here to say the right way to dress but just make sure it’s appropriate and in alignment with what you want to convey to people, and the industry you’re working in. Keep in your mind that: “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”.
Here’s what you should avoid:
- Wearing too short and too revealing clothes (skirt, dress, cleavage) – People will discredit you
- Making too much of a statement with clothes – It’s not a fashion show
- Dressing inappropriately for the position – Dress to impress
- Wearing shorts, or bermuda (or short pants) – That’s an office not the beach
- Having hair that needs to be brushed, cut, or dyed – Keep you hair neat
- Wearing casual open shoes ( eg, sandals, peep toe shoes are flip-flops)
- Wearing knee-high boots – Keep it simple and low
- Wearing denim, or multi-pocket trousers – It’s too casual
- Wearing sleeveless tops or dresses – Don’t reveal your arms
- Being too casual – No sneakers, sandals, hoodies, or sweatpants
Some people think as long as their work performance is great their appearance does not matter. On the contrary, people always judge by your appearance and look. If you look good, and perform well you have best chance for promotion.
Do not forget: “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”. Be better dressed than your colleagues and dress to impress your boss.
